It's true that plagiarism does happen in comedy, I believe Jim Davidson was a well-known culprite amongst other mainstream acts for stealing material from lesser-known comics.
On the other hand, through using sickipedia I have experience posting a joke which just popped into my head and seeing some twat infuriatingly just put "DUPLICATE" under it.
Also a joke isn't necessarily the property of the person who said/wrote it, from my own experience I don't think of jokes I see something or hear something that triggers it.
This is why I have massive respect for comics who work hard to be different and don't just produce a string of one line cliches but who make observations and tells stories which can still make you laugh.
Also what's wrong with the site, it's down and I thought of a joke this morning and am desperate to post it?!

The problem is, as ever, a nasty minority making hassle for everyone else. Rob does not want his website painted as a hotbed for plagiarism, Gary doesn't want his livelihood taken away (very much like Joel Veitch -v- Coca Cola!) and MOST of the users of the site just want to share fun they've thought of. A (sadly often vocal and abusive) minority thinks it's okay to steal jokes from professionals and say they made them up themselves, and then think its okay to shower abuse on all and sundry when their toys are taken away, purely because they can hide behind the Net. A bit like cutting a photo out of a magazine and saying you took it, and then throwing your toys out of the pram when the photographer comes and sues you.

I'm glad it's all blowing over. Just very unfortunate that two people whose contributions to comedy I rate very much have been painted as evil in this. Rob and Gary. Chin up, lads.

So the Chortle article states that copyright law has no provision for joke theft. Hmm...

The problem is songs and books are very complicated compositions, so plagiarism can be spotted pretty easily. Jokes are often just a witty one liner, or a bit of wordplaly, so it's not inconceivable that 2 people might make up the same, or similar joke.

I recently drove past someone selling bags of horse manure at the roadside for £5, and thought to myself - "That's shit". (true story).

I've never heard anyone say it before, but wouldn't be suprised if it's in one of Jimmy Carrs routines. If it's not, I insist on due credit being given if anyone so much as dares to think or repeat the same/similar line!

Or not...
